It originally covered the eastern half of the Cleveland metropolitan area, while the western half was served by area code 216. However, due to rapid growth in the Cleveland suburbs, area code 440 was overlaid on area code 216 in 1998. This resulted in the entire metropolitan area being served by a single area code.
