Area Code 470 History

Area code 470 was one of the original area codes established in 1947. Originally, it covered the entire state of Georgia. However, as the Atlanta metropolitan area began to grow, the need for more phone numbers led to the creation of area code 404 in 1954. This left 470 to cover the remainder of the state. The area code remained unchanged until 1984, when it was split to create area code 912. This was necessary to provide additional phone numbers for the growing Savannah area. 470 continued to cover the remainder of the state, while 912 covered the coastal region.

In 1996, area code 470 was split again to create area code 678. This was done to provide more phone numbers for the growing Atlanta area. 470 continued to cover the rural areas of the state, while 678 covered the metropolitan region.

Today, area code 470 is still in use and covers the entire state of Georgia.
