In 1995, area code 219 was created to serve the northern portion of Indiana, while the southern portion of the state continued to use 574. This created a large and complicated area code division that made it difficult for people in different parts of the state to call each other.

In 2002, the 574 area code was split in two. The northern portion of the code, which included Gary and South Bend, became area code 219. The southern portion of the code, which included Indianapolis, became area code 317.

This split was intended to be temporary, and it was hoped that the 574 area code would eventually be merged with 219. However, this never happened, and the 574 area code remains in use today.
