Area Code 574 History

574 Area Code HistoryThe 574 area code was originally assigned to northwestern Indiana in 1957. At the time, the area code covered all of northwest Indiana, as well as a small section of southwestern Michigan.

In 1995, area code 219 was created to serve the northern portion of Indiana, while the southern portion of the state continued to use 574. This created a large and complicated area code division that made it difficult for people in different parts of the state to call each other.

In 2002, the 574 area code was split in two. The northern portion of the code, which included Gary and South Bend, became area code 219. The southern portion of the code, which included Indianapolis, became area code 317.

This split was intended to be temporary, and it was hoped that the 574 area code would eventually be merged with 219. However, this never happened, and the 574 area code remains in use today.

Despite its complicated history, the 574 area code is a vital part of the Indiana telecommunications system. It is home to some of the state's largest cities, including Indianapolis, Gary, and South Bend. And it continues to play an important role in the development of Indiana's economy and culture.
