Area Code 619 is a telephone area code in southern California. It was created in a split from area code 714 on July 14, 1982. Area code 619 originally covered the entire San Diego metropolitan area. In 1996, however, the northern portion of the metropolitan area (including Escondido, Poway, and much of northern San Diego County) was split off into area code 760.Today, area code 619 covers the city of San Diego and the southern half of Riverside County. Major cities in the 619 area code include San Diego, El Cajon, Chula Vista, and National City.

Area code 619 is expected to run out of numbers in 2019. A new area code, 424, is being planned for the San Diego area.

Area Code 619 History

Area code 619 was one of the original area codes created in California in 1947. It originally covered the entire southern half of the state, from the Mexican border to Orange County. In 1957, most of the eastern portion of the code was split off to create area code 858. In 1995, the western portion of 619 was split off to create area code 760. This left 619 covering the San Diego metropolitan area.

The 619 area code has been in continuous use since its creation. It has been through several splits and recombinations, but has always covered the San Diego area.

The 619 area code is now in the midst of a significant growth spurt. The San Diego metropolitan area is one of the fastest-growing areas in the country. The 619 area code is expected to reach its quota of 10 million numbers by 2019.
