They called me and asked for my decreased son's phone number. Said they had to talk to him immediately. Don't know how they got my phone if they wanted my son. I told the guy my son didn't have a phone anymore. They asked where he lived. So I told them to go up to the Poconos and look out over the cliff and into the stream, you might find some of his ashes. He hung up on me.

This is actually a legit announcement from a Rep's office about neighborhood office hours to serve constituents, presumably in Philadelphia, based on the number given to return the call... but it's being broadcast outside the rep's district... (e.g. to Pittsburgh, which is rather too far from his neighborhood service centers). :(

What is Area Code 717 and Where is It Coming From?

Area code 717 is one of the original area codes established in Pennsylvania in 1947. It covers most of central and southern Pennsylvania, including the cities of Harrisburg, York, and Lancaster. The 717 area code was originally assigned to the entire state of Pennsylvania. As the population grew and the demand for phone service increased, new area codes were created to serve specific regions of the state. In 1994, the northern and western portions of the state were split off into area code 814, and the eastern portion was split off into area code 610. This left the 717 area code serving the central and southern regions of the state.

The 717 area code is coming to an end. In early 2018, the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission (PUC) announced that the 717 area code was running out of phone numbers. The PUC voted to split the 717 area code into two new area codes, area code 224 and area code 835. This means that the 717 area code will no longer be in use after December 31, 2018.

If you live in the 717 area code, or plan to move to central or southern Pennsylvania in the near future, you need to make sure that your phone number is in area code 224 or 835. If you have an existing phone number in the 717 area code, you will need to contact your service provider to get a new number in one of the new area codes.

For more information on the 717 area code and the upcoming split, visit the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission website at www.puc.state.pa.us.
