I received a voice mail stating that if I did not contact the Attorney General's office at (850) 299-4770 within the next four hour some type of legal action would be taken. I called back and advised the male (Indian with a British accent perhaps?) who answered that their message had been left on a govt. phone. At that point he denied it was from his office. He said they'd been getting quite a few crank calls. Right.

What is Area Code 850 and Where is It Coming From?

Area code 850 was created on October 1, 1997, as a result of a split of area code 904. This new area code included the western portion of Duval County, which was served by 904. The 850 area code serves the western Panhandle of Florida, including Pensacola, Panama City, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Crestview.

In October 2017, the Florida Public Service Commission approved an additional area code for the 850 region, to be implemented in late 2019 or early 2020. This new area code, 968, will serve the eastern portion of the 850 region, which is currently served by area code 850.

So what is area code 968 and where is it coming from? Area code 968 will be an overlay for the 850 region, which means that all area codes in the 850 region will remain in use. When the 968 area code is implemented, residents and businesses will be required to use 10-digit phone numbers, consisting of a 3-digit area code, a 7-digit subscriber number, and a 4-digit extension.

The implementation of area code 968 is necessary to meet increasing demand for phone numbers in the 850 region. With the growth of the region’s economy and population, the 850 region is running out of phone numbers.
