Area code 878 was one of the original area codes established in 1947. It covers parts of southwestern Pennsylvania, including the city of Pittsburgh.The 878 area code has seen several changes over the years. It was originally divided into two regions: 878-1 for the eastern half of the area code, and 878-2 for the western half. In 1996, the 878-1 region was divided into two parts: 878-11 for the northeastern part of the area code, and 878-12 for the southwestern part.
In 2000, the 878-2 region was divided into three parts: 878-21 for the eastern part of the area code, 878-22 for the central part, and 878-23 for the western part. This led to the creation of two new area codes, 412 and 724.
The 878 area code is currently in the process of being split. The northern part of the area code, including the city of Pittsburgh, will become part of the new 412 area code. The southern part of the area code, including the city of Johnstown, will become part of the new 724 area code.
This change is scheduled to take place in 2019. Until then, the 878 area code will continue to be in use.
