Area Code 913 was created on November 1, 1996, in a split of Area Code 916. The 913 area code serves the western and central portions of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The 913 area code was the first area code in the United States to be implemented by competitive bidding.

The 913 area code is also the first area code to be implemented without an accompanying overlay area code.

The Kansas City metropolitan area is the only metropolitan area in the United States that has more than one area code.

The 913 area code is also the second-largest area code in the United States, behind only Area Code 213 in Los Angeles.

The original boundaries of the 913 area code were the Kansas state line on the east, the Colorado state line on the south, and U.S. Route 36 on the west.

In October 1997, the 913 area code was split to create Area Code 816. The western portion of the 913 area code, including Kansas City and Lawrence, became Area Code 816. The eastern portion of the 913 area code, including Topeka, became Area Code 785.
