Area Code 925 History

Area code 925 was first put into service on November 21, 1998. It was created as a split from area code 510. The eastern portion, including the cities of Pittsburg, Concord, and Pleasant Hill, became area code 925, while the western portion, including the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, and Fremont, remained area code 510. The 925 area code was created to relieve some of the strain on 510, which was running out of phone numbers. At the time, 925 was projected to have enough numbers to last until 2029. However, due to the growth of the Bay Area and the popularity of cell phones, 925 is now projected to run out of numbers by 2021.

In response, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is proposing to split 925 into two new area codes, 747 and 928. If the proposal is approved, 747 would serve the eastern portion of the 925 area code, while 928 would serve the western portion. This would be the first time that the Bay Area would have three area codes.

The CPUC will be holding a public hearing on the proposal on June 21, 2017. If you'd like to learn more or share your thoughts on the proposal, please attend the hearing or send a comment to the CPUC.
