Area Code 984 was created on October 1, 1997, and was originally assigned to cover the entire state of North Carolina. In 2000, the area code was split, and the western portion of the state was assigned area code 828. The 984 area code has been the source of some controversy in recent years. In 2012, the North Carolina Utilities Commission proposed a plan to split the 984 area code, and create a new area code for the eastern portion of the state. This proposal was met with opposition from many residents and businesses in the 984 area code, and the plan was eventually scrapped.
